Wildflower Micro Wedding during COVID
2020 was definitely NOT the year of the big, fancy wedding. Instead, a new trend emerged, that of the super small, intimate or "micro" wedding.
Though they really can't be compared, Covid or no Covid there is really something special about tiny weddings and elopements. They tend to be really heartfelt and personal celebrations, focused on the love and ritual without all the "extras" of a larger event that can sometimes take on a life of their own! One silver lining of 2020 was getting a chance to work with a number of couples who had very small weddings, and who took us up on a service we've been quietly offering in the background for years, that isn't really suited to large weddings but is perfect for small ones. It's called From the Garden, and it's a really special offering where we work exclusively with flowers grown in our Cutting Garden- so everything is extremely local and seasonal, and literally grown and tended by hand by me and my family from seed to bloom in our Seattle Cutting Garden.
This couple wanted a wildflower feel to their flowers, which was wonderfully suited to the time they were married: late August, when the garden is filled with flowers like rudbeckia, yarrow, queen anne's lace, phlox, echinacea seed pods, and other textural elements. One thing that I love about working fully out of the garden is it really does give me a chance to tune in with the flowers and with the energy of the clients I'm designing for- to find some alchemy that is wanting to emerge. I know it has happened when I get emails like this from my clients:
"I am so grateful we found you and that you were able to accommodate us on short notice and produce such INCREDIBLE arrangements. Everyone was astonished at how beautiful (and fragrant!) they were, especially when I told them how you grew, harvested and arranged them all in your Seattle backyard. I just loved the earthy neutrals and wildflower elements you included. Yarrow is one of my favorite flowers by the way :) And I couldn’t get over how delicate and stunning those little dahlias were. The flowers were such a special element of our day."
The yarrow truly was singing that week, and it became an important design element, especially a few stems of a particularly beautiful shade of golden yellow yarrow that I reserved for Tara's bouquet. Enjoy this little glimpse into this intimate and joyful gathering!
