GROWING FLOWERS FROM SEED
Sunday, March 22nd, 2020 from 10am-1pm at the Botanique Studio and Cutting Garden
Seed starting! What a magical and miraculous thing that you can plant a tiny seed, and watch it grow into a huge, thriving plant. The process of growing flowers from seed is awe-inspiring, and the possibilities for what you can grow open up tremendously when you are not limited to the narrow options offered as starts in garden stores.
But starting seeds can be tricky, and sometimes really frustrating. Discouragement can set in if you can’t get your seeds to germinate, the seedlings don’t do well once they do germinate, or you run into other hurdles in trying to keep them alive/get them successfully planted out into your garden. Don't despair! In this three-hour, hands-on workshop, Kelly Sullivan from Botanique and Guest Teacher Agnes Cwalina from Flowers Sow Urban will teach you everything you need to know to successfully grow flowers from seed. We will walk you through two different methods for starting flowers from seed so you can see which one works better for you, and answer all your burning questions about seed starting! There will be ample, hands-on time where you will start your own tray of seeds to plant out in your garden this year, under the guidance of Kelly and Agnes. Registration for this intimate workshop is limited to eight participants, so with two instructors each student will get very personalized instruction and assistance! Topics covered will include:
• Reading/Understanding Seed Packets
• Hardening Off and Planting Out
• Direct Sowing vs. Starting seeds indoors in trays
• Demonstration of two different methods of seed starting (Basic sowing in trays with Kelly Sullivan and Soil Blocking with Agnes Cwalina)
• Overview of creating an indoor seed starting area
• Hands on time to plant one seed tray under the guidance of TWO instructors!
In addition, each participant will receive:
• A selection of Kelly’s favorite seeds from Floret Flower Farm to get your garden started this year
• All materials needed to start a tray of seeds during the workshop (soil, seeds, stakes, access to soil blocker, etc)
• A resource list to help you source additional seeds/supplies/tools for your garden
• Helpful handouts to jog your memory/help you retain everything you learn at the workshop
Now is the time to get your seeds started for your garden this year! Come join us and gain the skills and confidence you need to grow flowers from seed. Workshop registration is limited to just 8 participants- sign up soon to reserve your spot! REGISTER HERE!
