A Late Summer Floral Design and Cutting Garden Workshop
One of the most difficult parts of this year of COVID has been the reality that we cannot hold any in-person floral design or cutting garden workshops. Teaching people how to grow and arrange flowers is something that I (Kelly) am extremely passionate about, especially in the context of bringing people to the Cutting Garden and creating a very tactile, hands-on experience- something that just can't be replicated online. I know there were a lot of people who were looking forward to workshops this year, especially our annual Flower Field Day workshop where students spend a full day in the Cutting Garden and studio learning about growing and arranging flowers. I truly hope this year is just a pause to in-person learning, and that we will be able to hold in-person workshops again next year!
In the meantime, photos of previous workshops will just have to do. I never got a chance to blog this workshop which actually happened a few years ago, and was the first ever Flower Field Day workshop (then called Grow/Harvest/Design).
In this workshop, students spent the first half of the day in the Cutting Garden learning about growing flowers, with a specific focus on dahlias and blooms in the late summer garden (as this workshop took place in late September). After lunch, everyone harvested a bucket of their favorite garden blooms. The design project for this workshop was a compote arrangement, and after a design demo, each attendee created a beautiful piece of their own.
Many thanks to Kerry Jeanne Photography for documenting this workshop so beautifully! Fingers crossed that we can do it again next year...
